Newcity is always in the market for talented new writers in any all categories of coverage. See our guidelines here. On this page, we’re posting our most actively sought categories and special needs.
Cover stories: We’re looking for provocative original features connected to Chicago: profiles, news stories, essays, reported comics, etc. Stories generally fall into the 2000-2500 word range, but can go longer if warranted. Completed manuscripts or story proposals welcomed. See a gallery of previous cover stories here.
Fashion/Style: We’re looking for regular contributors to our Style section (fashion, beauty, home design). Spec pieces preferred for new writers, but proposals also welcome. See boutiqueville.com for previous coverage.
Books/Lit: We’re looking for regular coverage and reviews of books, authors and other literary players. Areas of special interest are Chicago authors, poetry and comics (aka graphic novels). Send proposals or spec reviews of recent works. Regular contibutors can access our stock of review copies of new and upcoming works. See lit.newcity.com for previous coverage.
Music: We’re looking for ideas on artists and impressarios we should profiling, as well as short previews of upcoming shows. Current needs especially include rock, hip-hop, R&B and DJ/electronic but all genres welcome. Profiles should be pitched in advance; previews should be written and sent in for new writers; we’ll use what we can if they meet our standards. Seemusic.newcity.com for previous coverage.
Stage: We’re looking for additional theater critics, as well as feature writers about theater and performance. Send a sample review or feature pitch. See newcitystage.com for previous coverage.
Drinking and Nightlife: We’re looking for stories about anything and everything related to the consumption of adult beverages. Profiles of mixologists, experiential journeys into the nightlife, reviews of new brands of tequila; our thirst is unquenchable. See resto.newcity.com for previous coverage.
