Newcity is delighted to announce F. Philip Barash as our new assistant design editor. In this role, Philip will work closely with editor Brian Hieggelke in planning and executing Newcity’s coverage of Chicago’s legendary design culture in home, architecture, fashion and graphic and product design.
F. Philip Barash is an independent writer, sometime curator, reluctant designer, unflagging advocate for good public space, committed dabbler and flaneur. His work with organizations such as the Poetry Foundation and EXPO Chicago on creative placemaking projects receives national recognition for its authentic, collaborative approach to the urban condition. Barash’s writing on art and design has appeared in academic and public-interest venues including Crain’s Chicago Business, ArtSlant, the literary journal of Columbia University, and in this magazine.
Prior to moving to Chicago to attend the Master of Arts Program in the Humanities at the University of Chicago, Barash lived and worked in Detroit, serving as creative director of Movement: Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival, the largest free electronic music festival in the world. He currently lives with his partner in the Loop neighborhood of Chicago.
All pitches for design coverage should be sent to Philip at [email protected].
