The Chicago Reader continues to cut away at its print product, making a formal announcement of significant changes to its listings this week, including a substantial further reduction in space allocated to its once-legendary theater section. Earlier this week, LA Weekly laid off its theater editor, in a move that led the LA Times to refer to theater critics as a dying breed. For our part, we increased the number of theater writers we work with, from three to about ten, about a year ago, and this week published a substantial cover story about performing arts in Chicago, accompanied by more theater advertising than we can remember.
